What is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self Defence?

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defence system developed by The Gracie Family in Brazil in the 1920′s.  Today what is known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was begun by the founder Carlos Gracie, who was the family’s first student of a Japanese grappling master Esai Maeda Koma.

Helio Gracie, together with his brother Carlos Gracie, founded the martial art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, known internationally as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).  Helio realized that due to his frail physique, most of the techniques he had learned from watching Carlos teach were particularly difficult for him to execute. Eager to make the techniques work for him, he began modifying them to accommodate his weak body. Emphasising the use of leverage and timing over strength and speed, Helio modified virtually all of the techniques and, through trial and error, created Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

The true purpose of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu focuses on techniques that will allow a person to defend them self against an attacker who may be bigger, stronger, and faster. Over the last 85 years, the techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu have not stopped evolving.

What started in an academy in Rio de Janeiro has now spread across the world.

Is there a difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?

The difference is in what and how we teach. Our approach to teaching and our mindset.

The main difference with what is being taught elsewhere an here at EKBJJ is “Self defence” first and sport Jiu-Jitsu second.  We are teaching the art in accordance to the original fight philosophy of Grandmaster Hélio Gracie.

The overall idea that you can be patient during the fight, and not have to go and attack before you defend.” Defence first, then attack later”. The problem is that the defensive mindset that is so characteristic of this amazing art is not being taught at 99% of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools.

More recently BJJ has seemingly become a fast growing ‘sport’ where as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has always remained closer to the Self Defence techniques and mindset as taught by Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

What if I never done Self Defence before?

The beauty of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is that it works for everyone.  It emphasises on technique, leverage, patience and this martial art has been proven to be effective even among people that are not naturally athletic, muscular or flexible.

The original MMA mixed martial art events (including the UFC) were developed by the Gracie family in order to show how relatively small and skinny Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fighters could effectively defend themselves against bigger and stronger trained professional fighters and martial artists.

It is normal to assume that if you never participated in martial arts or contact sports that  it’s too difficult to start now, or beyond your physical capabilities.  However Gracie Self Defence can be learned by anyone of any age and physical build.  Try a first class free and make your own decision based on experiencing it for yourself.

Is Self Defence training safe?

Safety is always the greatest concern at the EKBJJ academy. While accidental injuries may occur with any athletic activity, all training occurs in a controlled supervised environment. Neither Professor Eddie Kone nor his instructors will not tolerate any unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike behavior.

What should I expect when I join?

Many students join a Jiu-Jitsu academy expecting to be able to fight on day one.  Professor Eddie Kone learned the traditional way under the Gracie Family and directly from Grandmaster Helio Gracie.  The EBJJ Academy takes a more patient, structured approach.  Eddie teaches new students to learn the fundamental techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu rather than beating someone in a sparring match. He believes that learning the basic Gracie Self Defence techniques is essential for any student who wants to learn self-defence.

Can women learn?

Absolutely.  Women’s student numbers are growing. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective self-defence system by far, for women. All classes are mixed and the EKBJJ academy offers a safe, friendly and non-intimidating environment for women to learn. The growing numbers of female students ensures that female students will frequently enjoy female training partners.

What makes the EKBJJ Academy so special?

While some academies may promote their Professor or teacher as someone who received his belt from a member of the Gracie Family; Eddie teaches what he learned firsthand from the Founders.
The EKBJJ Academy is friendly, clean, and professional atmosphere that provides a safe and supportive environment for students to learn.  Professor Eddie Kone holds the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under Legendary BJJ and MMA fighter Royler Gracie.  This makes Eddie, Royler’s first European Black Belt.
Eddie has also personally been taught  by Grandmaster Helio Gracie, Rickson Gracie,Royce Gracie and the Valante Brothers learning the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Self Defence system and his aim is to pass this learning to students so the art may help others.

Is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu good for Self-Defence?

Yes! Most martial arts academies focus on kicks and punches. These are great if you are confident that you can trade punches and kicks with an attacker. Exchanging punches is a risk because there is a high risk that you will get hit. At the EKBJJ Academy we teach you:
Distance management- maintaing safe distance
Survival mindset
Efficiency of energy
Natural body movements
Effective self defence that can be learned by anyone.

We are proud to have students from 18 – to over 60

There is much much more but this needs to be experienced and learned.  Please contact us for a free first class.

Are the Self Defence classes suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. No previous experience is necessary; we are able to work with students of any skill level.

We have students of all ages and abilities.  Each class is designed so anyone can join and learn at any level.

What do students wear?

T-shirt and jogging for the 1st week.  Then the student must purchase a uniform (a white “kimono” or “Gi”) for the next week’s class.  This can be bought at the EKBJJ academy.

The official uniform of Jiu Jitsu in which you will be training is called a “Gi” or “Kimono”. This uniform consists of 3 pieces: a jacket, a pair of drawstring pants and a belt.

What should Self Defence students expect in the first class?

Gracie Jiu Jitsu Self Defence Classes begin with a short period of warm up exercises, followed by a series of self defence simple drills. You will be paired with an experienced practitioner for your first few classes to ease you in to the routine and training.

Am I too old?

NO, absolutely not! We have students of all ages, abilities and personal goals. We have found that a mixture of age groups in a class is beneficial and enjpyable to all. Each age group can learn something from the other.

At the EKBJJ academy, our class atmosphere is friendly and open and allows people of all ages to work at their own pace and ability.

Do students participate in BJJ competitions?

Yes, but only if they want to.  The main goals for our students are self defence, self-confidence, focus, discipline, coordination, health and fitness and more.  We have students who participate in competitions and do very well.  Competing can boost self-confidence and self-esteem.

Students are not obligated to compete but most develop the confidence and ambition to compete and we support them fully.
